I shook my head, as my heart squeezed painfully, threatening to burst with the right pressure. “What do you want from me?” I cried out. “Don't you get it darling? You caused us elites a lot of trouble and we're going to make you pay, and it's going to hurt…very, very badly.”

It wanted to fall into place. I forced my breath steady, the way my mother taught me, the way you steady your hands before stitching a wound. Then I spoke the only words that had ever worked. “ASH.” Black cinders rose off the floor, spiraling around the circle. The runes flared, resisting, but the ash didn’t care. It tightened, thickened, becoming a wall—around Dax’s ankles, around the etched lines, smothering the glow. For one heartbeat, the pull on him eased.

“Just do it.” Asmeral gathered the items she needed, moving with a precision that showed her deep knowledge of herbal lore. She fetched a mortar and pestle, various dried herbs, and a small vial of a dark liquid. Abigail watched silently, still shaken by the confrontation but relieved that something was being done to help Damian. Then I looked away, I maintained a bit of prestige that I had forgotten when I was with her. I could see clearly as Aphrodite stepped forward, while Ashley's eyes had changed color. Because of that, making my fists clenched tightly, I tried to strengthen my heart. Let it go, let Aphrodite suffer this time. That's right, just as the game started, Aphrodite had fallen on her own knees. As expected that Ashley would make Aphrodite unable to breathe. Because those green eyes said… Ashley's magic and power were still as strong as they were in the past.
