Author's POV Sandra's breathing was ragged, blood trickling from a wound on her side as she ran forward and raised a trembling hand. Summoning that burst of air to snuff out Pierce's flame took great more energy than she had ever imagined. But if she did not act now, there would never be a second chance. Her exhausted eyes settled on Pierce, who blinked in shock. Before Pierce could react, Sandra muttered an incantation under her breath. She only managed to graze her forehead though, as Pierce threw out a hand and shoved her away.

I replied, and stilled. The scarfed man did likewise. “Stop!” He called out to the others. “What?” The bearded man asked. “The sand moved,” the scarfed man replied. “The sand always moves,” the woman replied. The sand shifted, rising up, and then settling down, as if something large had moved up and then gone down again. “Admittedly, not like that,” she amended drawing her wickedly hooked knives. With a deafening screech, something horrifying surged out of the sand, seized a mouthful of my skeletons, before diving back into the sand as if it were water, scattering bones in its wake.

Every tiny sound feels deafening in the silence. My feet touch the floor. Cold wood. I wince. Slowly, I rise and begin tiptoeing toward the door. One step. Two. Three. The floorboard near the dresser creaks. I freeze. Neither woman moves. I reach for the doorknob and twist it with painful slowness. The hinges groan softly. Sandra jerks upright halfway with a snort. My heart nearly tears through my ribs. I stop breathing. She scratches her stomach, mutters something about hot wings, then collapses backward and resumes snoring.

Samantha recoiled, her Void-Iron sword clattering to the floor. "This isn't over!" Samantha screamed, her form beginning to blur into mist as the manor’s ceiling finally began to cave in. "The Altar is a grave, Audrey! I'll see you in the Neutral Zone!" Samantha vanished just as a massive oak beam crashed down where she had been standing. Audrey turned to the hearth. Terren was pinned beneath the rubble. The violet light had left his eyes, leaving him small and broken. He looked up at her, a moment of clarity returning to his gaze.
