I had only said "I'll drop something off".....but the walk up to Mercy Memorial's pediatric wing felt longer than it should, the air outside too bright and sharp. I had been volunteering that morning, translating pediatric discharge instructions and folding extra blankets in the family waiting room. Still, once I heard what had happened in the Lynch room....the fight, the video, the spectacle....the rest of my day fell away.

Alex stayed behind in the car, monitoring the situation through his laptop. The team moved silently, their footsteps muffled by the thick grass. I go to her quickly before she has a chance to see me and react, grabbing her head just as she lifts it to look at me, her eyes go wide and her mouth opens so she could protest just as I put her to sleep.

As she veered off in that direction, rough hands stopped her. She heard the noise of a door slamming shut and then someone removed the hood from over her face. The pillow case had let in some light. Emma was grateful that the bright light in the small room didn’t hurt her eyes. She was in a small, grey room. The walls, floor and ceiling were made of painted concrete.
