The trees on Aldren Street turned first. I noticed on a Tuesday morning walking to the café. The particular gold of them in the early October light, the specific quality of autumn in a city that had been summer for months and was now shifting into something quieter and more interior. The café had its door closed again. The barista with the paint stained fingers was back behind the counter after a summer absence. The particular smell of the place, coffee and cinnamon and the warmth of somewhere that had been the same for a long time, came through the door as I pushed it open. Our table was empty.

Just held hands over the console and watched the world go by. Oakwood was tiny. One main street with a few shops. A diner. A library. A post office. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone. We went to the post office first. Showed the photos to the lady at the counter. An older woman with big glasses and curly grey hair. "These came from here," Louis said. "Mailed in the last few weeks. Do you recognize the woman?" She looked at the photos for a long time. Then she looked at us. Then back at the photos.

It looked like someone had cleared most of the ice from the walkway earlier in the day, and while there was snow everywhere, at least it wasn’t frozen. With Ben’s hand in mine, we headed to the post office, which would be closing soon since it was a Saturday, and they were only open until noon on Saturdays. Once Charlotte was alone, she was able to take in just how quiet and old the little town was. The station itself was set at the edge of town and left a clear view from its front doors down the main street. The town itself was shrouded in a cool mist and the autumn breeze brought the swaying of long, yellow and orange branches. No matter how many times I came to Centerville after being at Raven, it never felt different to me, but today… the little stores lining the streets looked like they had changed positions. Even the bus stop where I used to wait after work looked different. I sighed. “How long has it been since I was last here? The cool breeze rustled through the trees, sending a cascade of red, orange, and yellow leaves fluttering down to the ground.
