She was all vague on the phone earlier when I asked her if she knew anything about that Pedro Montener story and now the doubts refuse to leave me. It’s a late night in the middle of September and even though it’s warmer than usual for the season, I can smell the scent of autumn in the air. In the dusk I can see the yellow already creeping up at the trees and bushes lined up diligently near the sidewalks to form a tunnel over our heads.

Fall is fast approaching as the trees that were just green last week are now slowly turning red. The airiness underneath my pants is quite uncomfortable. I packed a pair of underwear in my purse, just in case but I really feel like dropping dead. This isn't only out of my comfort zone, it makes me feel anxious to the point of throwing up. I wrap a reddish-brown scarf around my head, letting it glide down my shoulder. "Front door open," the automated voice announces. That must be Frank. "The car is waiting outside. Whenever you're ready, Ma'am," Frank says loudly.

Enough that it no longer surprised her every single time. Enough that hearing it didn't feel strange anymore. Sometimes Jessica would catch herself smiling before she even realised she was doing it. A great distraction from the impending doom lingering in Oregon.

I need coffee. I chose to walk to the gym today, as my apartment is only 10 minutes away. Besides… The weather is nice and I had a feeling I’d need the walk to clear my mind after talking to John.
