I was pretty sure he’d be angry, maybe even confrontational, but I hoped he could hold it together, at least a little. I fidgeted with my hands, stuffing them into my pockets to keep them from shaking. The weather had turned colder since I left home, and October’s chill was setting in. The trees around the estate were changing colors, blending into the warm hues of gold and red that signaled autumn’s arrival. It was my favorite time of year, but the sense of dread hanging over me made it hard to enjoy.
