she said, standing up and offering me the basket of pinecones, “why don’t you take these to each of the guest cabins? Autumn seems to have come early this year, so I’d like to make the rooms cosy.”
“Thank you,” I said, looking up at her with round, grateful eyes. My throat felt full, but I didn’t cry. I took the basket, and placed a pinecone beside the evergreen scented candle on the windowsill. There were a few springs of fern leaves in the basket, too, and I propped one between the candle and the pinecone.
