The healing, the strength, the connection—it all made terrible sense now.
Someone grabbed Ava from behind, trying to tear her away from me. She screamed, and I felt something inside me break open, something wild and powerful and furious. I held onto her hand with everything I had, feeling my own body start to change, bones shifting in ways that should have been agonizing but felt almost natural.
"No!" I roared, and it came out half-human, half-animal. "You can't have her!"
But there were too many of them. Strong hands pried my fingers away from Ava's, and I watched in horror as she was dragged backward, her eyes wide with terror, her hand reaching for me.
