Been browsing a lot of submission guidelines lately while trying to get my own manuscript out there. Most of the big agents and publishers still point to that classic 80k to 100k words for adult fiction. That seems to be the sweet spot for printing costs and reader expectations. Sci-fi and fantasy often get a bit more leeway, edging up towards 120k or so because of world-building needs.

But honestly, I've seen debuts all over the map. I picked up a literary fiction book the other day that couldn't have been more than 65k, but it felt complete. It's a target, not a rule. The real question for me is whether the story justifies its length—I've read 300k epics that flew by and 70k books that dragged.

I've seen so many different numbers thrown around for 'average' novel length, it's almost meaningless without specifying the genre. The general ballpark I keep seeing from publishers is 70,000 to 90,000 words for a debut adult novel, but that's just the entry point. Dig into genres, and the definitions shift dramatically. What defines a 'typical' length really depends on reader and publisher expectations for the story's scope. A 50,000-word manuscript often gets labeled a novella, which can feel frustrating for authors whose story is concise but complete. On the flip side, I've read 200,000-word web serials that are chopped into three 'novels' for print. The word count obsession can be a trap. Some of the most impactful stories I've read, like 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane', are relatively brief but pack every word with meaning, while other stories use a higher count to build a sprawling, lived-in world.

In the end, asking for the average is like asking for the average shoe size—it tells you nothing about what will fit a specific story or a specific reader's appetite. I care more about whether the length matches the narrative ambition than hitting some arbitrary industry median. The typical length is just the common playing field; the good books are the ones that make you forget to count.

Book page word counts can vary wildly depending on so many factors—font size, margins, genre, even the era it was published.
