*** The bakery was small but cosy with pale pink wooden planks flushed to the walls and a shelf of condiments and samples of bread and cheese for customers to try. In the middle of the bakery was a lone table, long and rectangular that was covered with an assortment of freshly baked goodies. John Grant stopped for a while as he took in the sight and the aromatic smell of the place. There were two female customers in the shop, both chatting with an elderly woman who donned a dusty brown apron. A little boy was running around the table with his arms stretched out like a plane going, “Wheeeeeee!” John followed Anson as he picked up a tray from the side of the table.

Their wandering had taken them to a bakery, and the delicious smells inside the softly lit shop quickly distracted Andrea. “What is that yummy looking pastry?” She pointed to rounds of what looked to be puff pastry sprinkled with green nuts and drizzled with caramel sauce. Dominating the sweets section were also tiers of flaky tartlets, delicately browned triangular biscuits and fan-shaped pastel cookies. Domes of bread, ranging from family size to single serving, took up much of the rest of the shelves. The bread on the Wednesday in the third week of January of the thirty-first year was made in the established form. The established form was not a recipe — though there was a recipe, and the recipe was the same recipe they had been using since the third year, when Don had found the baker's manual in the secondhand bookshop in the county town and brought it home with the quality of someone who had found something important. The recipe was the recipe. The established form was the pattern of movements and attentions and silences and speaking that had grown up around the recipe over thirty years, the specific choreography of the bread Wednesday that had become as familiar as breathing.

Fragile. They rounded the last column and there it was: Baker’s Delight, glass cases gleaming with golden pastries, crusty loaves, plaits lacquered in glaze, rows of soft rolls dusted with flour like fresh snow. Heat burped from the ovens in soft waves, carrying butter and yeast and that impossible smell of bread at the exact second it decides to be bread.

Zoey's POV The bakery smelled indecently good—like butter and sugar had teamed up to remind every adult that happiness is way simpler than we like to admit. The display case gleamed with perfectly aligned rows of pastries, like someone had organized indulgence with a ruler. I was sitting at a table with Mia and Madeline.

Levi Bakal’s bakery seemed as dull as dishwater. Fair enough, he’d just bought the place, but it was clearly in disrepair and would not be in use in the foreseeable future. It was the first time Abby had seen the actual bakery, and she was shocked at how much Levi needed to do before it was functional. The crumbling wallpaper revealed water damage on the far wall. The place smelled musty and looked filthy. Kitchen equipment in the back would need replacing. What was Levi thinking?

Kaia followed the smell around the corner to find a rundown bakery. Ignoring how the building seemed to be falling apart, she stepped inside to find shelves of baked goods. There were croissants, pies, buns, loaves and chocolate-covered pastries. God how she loved pastries. Lynn had followed her in and was investigating the displayed goods, sniffing each of them with delight. An old woman hobbled out from the back room, "Welcome dearies, what can I get for you?"

Six months later... The bakery was very busy. As usual, the customers of 'The Enchanted Chefs' went in early to buy their favorite breads, pastries, and cakes. "Mmm, this pastry is always so good! It keeps me going for all day at work!" commented a girl to her companion. "Well, I've never tasted a banana cake that's so yummy! Look! I even bought a whole loaf for the weekend!" Brie always smiled when she served the customers. She always put a small amount of magic in their products. Every bite would bring happiness and hope.
