Tied to a chair. Her throat is cut from ear to ear, blood pooling beneath her feet, staining the wood. Her eyes are open. Empty. Her head is tilted downward, and there’s a note pinned to her dark hair with a blade, fluttering gently in the breeze. The wave of death hits me so hard I double over. My knees slam into the floorboards and I scream—not a human sound, not my own voice, but the banshee’s. Raw. Ethereal. Final. The sound tears out of me with such force it rattles the windows, pulls the shadows back into hiding.

I spun, panic clawing at my chest as voices crashed over me. “I didn’t mean to!” I screamed. “He—he came at me—I felt—” I couldn’t explain it. One second I was standing near the long table, trying to breathe through the suffocating stares, and the next— Pressure. A threat. Something ancient and feral had surged up from inside me, roaring now. And then blood. “Silence,” Ronan commanded again, louder this time. The wolves obeyed—but their eyes never left me. The dead warrior’s packmates knelt beside his body, faces twisted with grief and rage. One of them looked up at Ronan, eyes blazing.

I tiptoed around, hoping to surprise him, but he really wasn't around. I sat on the living room couch, noticing that he had left some papers behind. I picked up one of the many that were there, with a slightly curious name, “Banshee.” I observed the drawing on the page: a woman in a long dress appeared to be crying. I glanced at the transcription next to the drawing. “Banshee or Ben sidhe, the one who can see death, becomes her friend. Her scream can be heard for miles, and it's so powerful that it can easily shatter a skull. Due to her dark powers, the banshee can be easily hated by other creatures.”

Dorin wanted him to scream. He wanted him to shout and release all the pain he was holding inside. Until he noticed movement on the ground and the nearest trees as small birds and critters came near them.
