the storekeeper said, glancing at the book, “most fathers come back for that one. They say it helps.”
I looked up, smiling. “Then I’ll take it.”
By the time I got to the counter, my hands were full — bags of tiny clothes, blankets, bottles, things I didn’t even know I’d picked. The attendants moved carefully, like handling glass. One of them offered to carry the bags, but I waved her off.
Outside, the evening air was cooler. I loaded the bags into the car myself, each one rustling as it hit the seat. I felt lighter.
