Barry and Dianne had finally been arrested, handcuffed in front of cameras, stripped of the dignity they had stolen from my biological father so many years ago. I had known the truth long before then. The knowledge had lived inside me like poison, slowly burning through my veins. Seeing justice finally catch up to them hadn’t brought relief the way I thought it would. It brought closure. I know she is my mother, but it's not an excuse for what she did. For what she and Barry did. Mr. Wells had testified against them. Calm. Precise. Unflinching. He had spoken about the money laundering, the forged documents, the offshore accounts, and finally, the murder.

In the end, Meredith and George decided to arrange a meeting with the police detective assigned to Helena’s case, Detective Sergio. He was a tall, lean man with clean-cut hazelnut hair. Alice could make out the wrinkles in his forehead and cheeks as he settled himself in front of her. She watched the man remove his black coat and placed it on the table before taking out a medium-sized notepad and a pen. Alice loved comic books about detectives. Her favorite was James Gordon; he was Batman’s acquaintance and a respectable captain of the Gotham City Police Department. Whenever she saw a detective, she could not help but be mesmerized by their badges and work.

’ Sheriff Emmett mumbled. ‘How would you describe Barry?’ Flynn asked suddenly. The coroner removed his glasses and placed it on his table. ‘Barry is an easygoing guy. A bit shy and very private. He was friendly with everyone but didn’t exactly keep any close friends here. Now, you’d answer my question. Why the sudden interest in Barry, Agent?’ ‘The most recent missing lady was last seen in his house.’ Flynn answered as he packed up the papers he had scattered on the table. ‘Do us a favor and keep your eyes open. If you see anything, hear anything, you give us a call.’

“Find someone discreet, a private investigator, or a freelancer and have them tail Barry 24/7 . Every time he breathes near another woman, I want to know.” She sat up on her end of the line; I could hear the rustle of sheets. “You’re serious?” “Dead serious.” I said. “And Rue… don’t ask questions. Just get it done.” In a few days, the evidence was sitting in my inbox. Barry, looking like the polished corporate darling he always was, except his hand was sliding up a waitress’s thigh in one video, and his mouth was on Victoria’s neck in another.

Hearing the dialogue between the leading security and the police, Ava looks pale and can't help but look at Allen. Allen still has a faint smile on his face, as if the things that happened in front of him were not called at all. When the leader security finished, Allen went up to the front step and grabbed his mobile phone easily. "This comrade of police, there is something you should have heard about, is the captain of the criminal investigation team, I and he..." Then Allen said a few words, smiling hanging up the phone.

“I want to catch the sonofabitch who took your daughter, but I want to get the right guy.” Mr. Barrett wrapped his arms around himself, leaning slightly forward so that his posture began to mimic that of his wife. His face became a collection of tics and twitches, as if he were about to undergo a change, a metamorphosis. When he spoke, his voice was hushed and choked. “Hank Bukhari is the right guy.” Hammett stood and walked around his desk. He hesitated but then placed a hand lightly on Mr. Barrett’s shoulder. He almost expected the man to jerk away, or even throw a punch, but instead he stood still and silent, allowing the contact.

His hand was swollen because he did it himself. She said nothing, her red lips pursed, her eyes fixed on Derek. But Bruno reacted first, his tone coldly sweeping towards Allen. “You dare use handcuffs on them? Who taught you the method of investigating this case?” Allen's face turned white with fear, he lacked confidence as he spoke. “Mr. Bruno, both of them are suspects, so…” Bruno's phoenix eyes narrowed slightly, he emphasized each word. “Remove their handcuffs.” “Yes.”

“You really had me worried.” He attempts a shrug, then grimaces. “We got him, that’s what counts.” “You’re going to be okay, that’s what counts,” I correct him sternly, and I hear Tucker chuckling quietly across the room. “Any updates, Detective?” I ask as I pull a chair up close enough on Allen’s left side to be able to hold his hand.
