Cold green eyes penetrated his soul. And he swung hard as he could, the bat flashing with the brilliance of a thousand suns, filling the darkness and canceling the night. The thing screeched and everything exploded into whiteness. Homerun. *** He slowly came to, sitting on the edge of the tailgate, crying quietly, cradling his son’s baseball bat. Eventually (how long didn’t matter, because he now understood time had no meaning here) his sobs subsided, tears drying up. He heaved one last sigh, wiped his eyes with his forearm and looked up.

Nate asked Beatrice, "I heard it, but don't scare him like that," Beatrice said. Caliber started to cry as he sensed Nate was mad because of what he said. "I'm sorry daddy…" Caliber said. Beatrice made him stop and wipe his tears; everyone passing by in their direction started looking at them. "Shh, stop crying…" Beatrice said this was her weakness; once she saw a child crying, it seemed like her heart was tearing apart. "Dad is mad at me…" Caliber said and wiped his own tears.

I climb out of the dirty passage with a deep sigh and after putting my newly bought gadget into the inside of my coat.

I pull my arm free. The bat comes down once on Luca’s tied hands. The crack that follows is enough. Luca’s scream tears through the room, raw and uncontrolled as his body jerks violently against the chair, his hands already swelling where the impact landed. I step closer again, lowering the bat slightly as I look at him. “Go on,” I say coldly. “Use them.” He can’t even respond properly, his body shaking too hard, his breath coming out in broken gasps.
