I took her out of her crib and smiled seeing how beautiful she was. “Hello my baby… why is my Hyacinth crying?” I tried my best to console her. I even tried to play with her in her crib but she wouldn't stop. “Are you hurt somewhere?” I raised her with all my strength. Unlike any other baby, Hyacinth is really gifted. In fact… I am not boasting about her but she might be the most beautiful child in the whole pack. I was giving up on trying to stop her from crying when Tyrone came inside. He looked at me with an eyes trying to figure out what was happening around him.

“Yes, I know that. But you just have to be strong. For Greg. For yourself.” Before I could respond, a small voice piped up beside us. Greg tugged at the hem of my black dress, his big eyes looking up at me with innocent concern. “Mommy, Mommy… you remember you told me that whatever life gives, life will actually take. He was so brilliant, so calculating, yet completely blind to what was happening right in front of him.

My eyes flood without my permission, tears streaking through blood and sweat. “Tell me you want me,” he growls. “Say it. Beg me.” I can’t. My mouth opens, but there’s no air, no words. He laughs. Low and bitter. “Too proud now, huh? Even when I’ve got you broken.” He moves. The bat slides off my throat, and I gasp, choking, dragging in a breath so sharp it tears through my lungs. I don’t know whether it’s mercy or just another torment, to let me breathe before he takes something else.

The phone dropped onto the towel on the side table. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks. I felt so used. So stupid. I hugged my knees and cried harder in the tub. The bathroom door opened quietly. Martinez stepped in. He saw my tears immediately. His eyes moved over my naked body in the water. “Tell me the exact reason you’re crying,” he said in a low, steady voice, “and I’ll fix it.”
