Tom answered. "Then why are you back at the hospital?" I asked. "I wished to speak with you personally, Alpha," he said. "Go on," I said. "Alpha, those women you call assailants are relatives of the deceased warriors. Traditionally, the beta, gamma, and Alpha help those families survive while they mourn. What happened today contradicts that. I fear it could cause pack problems," Tom said. Go ahead!” Bloody Christ, Hattie, I need some ME time! “I knew her!” I yell with built-up frustration while pointing to the marred television. “Magen…she was good to me! She didn’t deserve to die!”

She set the loaf beside the ice gel pack she’d used countless times lately, as if sugar and cold, kindness and discipline, could together make strength. “Let’s go,” Kai said. “Let’s go,” Aria echoed. At the entrance, they paused. Both donned hats, hoods, sunglasses—not hiding, but armoring their skin. Aria put her hand on the handle and, without looking at him, said: “Red.” Kai nodded. “Red.” The lock clicked open. Light pooled across the marble stairwell. Below, faint murmurs: someone on the phone, someone stepping outside, the street rising in waves. Barton was already at the gate, papers in hand, speaking with the building manager.

“This is Sheriff Matt Kirby. Can you give me your location?” The woman started hyperventilating, but she said something tangible. “Sheriff . . . Hattie . . . office.” Matt covered the microphone. He looked between Goldman and Patty. “She said sheriff, Hattie, and office. Does that mean anything to either one of you?” Goldman looked confused. He shook his head. “Wait, is that Hattie from Lester’s office?” Patty asked. Matt uncovered the mic. “Hattie? Is this Hattie? Lester Jenkins’s secretary?”

I coughed a bit, gripping myself tighter. " Commander Snake, we're here," Kira announced. Folding her hands, Jeff walked forward. It was quiet for a while until a door opened and a huge man walked out, his face completely hidden by the hat he wore. I trembled slightly, but still looked at him. I could feel his gaze on me and could detect a faint scar running down his face. " You're late." He began, his voice gruff. Kira sighed. " Yeah boss, we're sorry about that. We got a bit held up." She said, glancing at me. I ignored her. His gaze settled back on me.
