Our eyes scanned the space between the trees where the moonlight illuminated a little wooden pirogue boat that seemed as if it were filled with white light. The Beast had stilled, scenting the air, sage and night-blooming jasmine filled our head. I quieted at attention, something deep within me held poised, all instincts man, wolf, and Beast zeroing in on what was before us. The Beast’s rage quelled. Something thrashed within the boat, our head cocked, and we took one step forward, registering that something dark was harming the light, when the next thrash tipped the boat.
