Mum and Kayla both cover their mouths again, this time in horror and guilt, and something sharp twists in my stomach.
Dad leans forward, his voice low and tight. “How bad is she?”
Yeah, he knows. He knows exactly what that course demands.
“Broken nose, cheekbone, ribs,” Nicholas says. “But she stood and continued to fight on a shattered femur, damaging her artery and the surrounding soft tissue.”
Dad inhales sharply.
Mum gasps, her eyes flooding. Kayla lets out a broken sob. Lottie and Alice both have their hands clamped over their mouths.
