The satchel was sitting in the back with their other luggages. They drove in silence for a few minutes, crossing the bridge over Hudson River and gradually moving out of the city. Maddie opened the book she'd been reading and flipped the pages impatiently. Hell, she couldn't concentrate even if she wanted badly to get lost in the world behind the pages, even if she wanted to distract herself from her thoughts. She was too restless. Something had to happen.

The massive crowd surged forward, carrying cameras, microphones, and livestream equipment as they followed me around to the side of the building, where a wide open lawn lay. she rasped. Francis could already see the answer clear in her eyes, he stood up and placing the book he was reading on the kitchen counter, he took slow but calculated steps to her. He stood in front of her, letting her breath in his scent and knowing it was doing something to her brain. He let her have a good look of his perfect body and even though his fingers itched to caress her face, he forced them by his side, “what is that, ma’am?” he challenged, perhaps if she should just tell him, he would let her off the hook and give her what she wants.

Celeste POV The door shut with a gentle sound, but the click felt deafening in my ears. My heart was still beating fast, echoing the fire left behind on my lips. Alexander’s kiss stole something from me, something I thought I’d buried with Clara. I stood stuck in a spot, leaning the edge of the mahogany bookshelf for support. My legs weren’t shaking, no, they shouldn't be. I can’t allow it. Not here. Not when I’d come this far. Not after six years of well constructed plans.

That was my cue. I moved quickly and quietly, past the old wooden tables and into the far corner of the library. The back wall was lined with books that probably hadn’t been touched in years—dusty encyclopedias and ancient history volumes. No security cameras, no curious eyes. Just the soft hum of the air conditioner and the occasional muffled laugh from up front. Behind the last shelf, near the wall, something shimmered. Just barely. I blinked. Thought maybe it was a trick of the light. But it wasn’t.

I slid my glasses on and walked out of the building calm, practiced, the way predators walk when they’ve decided to hunt. The plan was starting to move. The Book was out of the vault, and the city didn’t yet know it was about to burn.

Besides the streets was busy still and it felt magical tonight. We stopped by the front of the library. It had some benches in the front, and right in front of it was a beautiful three dimensional sculpture of a book with characters coming out of it. I had always passed by this library on my way to work but I had never stopped to notice how ethereal it looked.
