Novalee's phone clattered to the floor. She didn't remember the drive to the hospital. James had come to get her—Hera had called him when Novalee collapsed. He'd driven while she sat in the passenger seat, numb and silent. Dead. Her parents were dead. At the hospital, a doctor with kind eyes explained what had happened. Her parents had been driving home from the grocery store. A drunk driver ran a red light. T-boned their sedan on the driver's side. Impact killed her father instantly. Her mother died before the ambulance arrived.

I emphasized the critical new directive, the one that made my own blood run cold: "Team one’s top priority, above everything else, is to investigate the death of my grandmother." Pascal’s pen stopped moving. Nova, sitting beside me, squeezed my hand under the table, recognizing the magnitude of the demand. "Boss, we all know it was an accident," he said carefully. We checked all the rooms before finally finding hers. She was on the bed laying lifeless! That was what I thought though, bottles of buzz on the floor. I shake her body on the bed but she was not replying, she looked dead except she was still breathing. I carried her quickly and laid her at the backseat of my car, I was about entering the driver's seat when Andrew stopped me. "Go sit at the back, let me drive, I can't watch you murder us" without arguing, I just went to the backseat, placed Nova's head on my laps while Andrew drove us to the hospital

I softly utter the moment my eyes find Alpha Maxwell on his knees, sobbing. Kingsley leaned on the head of the sofa, his palms resting on it, his head lowered. He was also weeping. “Kingsley,” Elara darts toward him. “Where is Nova?” Her voice is filled with fear. Kingsley keeps mute, but I notice his hands clutching the sofa into fists in anger.
