About a grumpy, retired surgeon who gets pulled into solving a crime in his sleepy coastal town.” I burst out laughing, the sound mingling with the crash of the waves. “Arthur! You’re writing a murder mystery?”

CASSANDRA With the alpha guy yakking to Agnes and Joel, I browsed the books to keep myself busy. I saw some of my favorite authors there, much to my pleasant surprise. Seems like we had something in common. I loved reading. Yeah, I was a nerd. But no one had to know, right? A werewolf nerd. I couldn’t help the insane laughter bubbling up in my throat. “What’s so funny?” a deep, sexy voice asked right behind me.

Jenkins, the owner of the quaint bookshop where she had spent countless hours browsing through shelves and seeking advice on rare books. "Mrs. Jenkins?" Emma's voice trembled with confusion and a hint of betrayal. "But why? You're...you're the one who's been helping us." Mrs. Jenkins' smile grew wider, her eyes glinting with a sinister light. "Oh, Emma, dear Emma. You've been so blind. I've been playing a role, just like everyone else in this game. And you, my dear, are one of the most intriguing pieces on the board." Julian's eyes narrowed, his hand instinctively reaching for his gun. "You're the one who's been behind the organization? But why? What's your endgame?"

"At least it is better here than running wild in the forest and putting the lives of others at risk," I said laughing at my not so funny joke. The sound of my dry laugh came back to me and it made me feel uncomfortable. I stood up and went to the shelf and picked one of the books on the third shelf. Returning to my seat, I placed the book on the table without meaning to open it.

I replied, shaking his hand briefly before pulling it back, a tingle left in its place. “So, Kalia, what’s so captivating in that book of yours that you almost missed the best coffee in town?” He nodded toward my cup. I tilted my head, considering him. “You are assuming I don’t already know that this place has the best coffee.” He raised an eyebrow. “Fair enough. But now I’m curious about the book.” I held it up, the cover facing him. “It’s a mystery novel. Keeps me on my toes.” He leaned in slightly, intrigued. “A mystery, huh? So, you like solving puzzles?”

I smiled and brought out a new novel I got from the store the other day and opened the first chapter to read. There are like ten minutes before assembly starts so I can read at least a chapter or two before it starts. ‘Hmm… interesting’ i thought to myself. “Why didn't I know about this book already?” I muttered under my breath and turned to the next page. “Very interesting.” “I know it is,” I turned my head to see Chris put his bag on the desk beside me and sat down on the chair. “Even though I haven't read it, I know it is interesting”

Something sinister lay in the silence and Dan turned to scan the way. He wouldn't be caught off guard again. A shadow shifted in his periphery, and he turned as a man stepped from between two cars. Medium heights. Medium build. Well-dressed and carrying a briefcase. Not someone Betty would normally have noticed. Not someone she would normally have thought of as a threat. But these weren't normal circumstances, and everyone was a threat until proven otherwise. "Hey!" the man called out, offering a quick wave and a brief smile. "I've locked myself out of my car, and my cell phone is in it. Can you give me a hand?"

Then a shy, almost mischievous smile curved her lips. “Hmm… maybe because I’ve read too many mystery novels,” She said softly, a small laugh escaping her. Aurora turned in her seat to look at her friend, laughter glinting in her eyes. “So all those late-night book sessions finally paid off” She teased. Elara chuckled, relaxing into the conversation. Ian laughed under his breath, shaking his head in amusement. “Well, we might just have to make you our honorary investigator then” He said, glancing at her in the mirror with a wink.

But even when they’re hungover, they usually at least send me a quick message to let me know they’re alive. I put my phone away and try to focus on the book launch that’s happening in front of us. Sarah was right when she said I wouldn’t be bored. I thought I would be sitting here counting the minutes until I could politely leave, but I actually find myself taking an interest in the story. The author reading from what sounds like a mystery novel, and the way she brings the characters to life makes me want to know what happens next. The plot involves a woman who discovers that her neighbor has been living under a fake identity for years.
