She peered over the edge of the bed and saw the book lying on the floor, as if it had revealed some hidden secret.
She hesitated, then reached out and picked it up. The cover was strangely cold—colder than paper should be, as if it had absorbed the night's chill or carried with it an unknown breath of darkness. She returned it to the table and turned again, pulling the blanket tighter around herself, her eyes squeezed shut. Yet her heart still pounded with restless anxiety, whispering that his fall hadn't been accidental, but deliberate.
