The wolf began to shift and the wolves that had been running with him stopped back at the tree line, as if he had told them to. A minute later I was looking at the new Alpha Zachary. The shelves stretched to the ceiling, filled with books that looked like they hadn’t been touched in years. I walked slowly between the rows, running my fingers along the shelves until I found the section on werewolf history. I grabbed a few thick books that looked promising and carried them to a quiet corner table near the window. The light was soft there, golden and peaceful. I let out a breath and opened the first book, skimming through chapters on bloodlines, first shifts, pack traditions… stuff I probably should have known already. I’d only read a few pages when someone pulled out the chair across from me.

Once he nodded, we set off. The undergrowth was thick outside the pack house. The area had not been kept, it was a mess. It was a good thing we weren’t human or we would have been absolutely covered in stings and bites, insects and nettles absolutely everywhere. Sure, we felt it, but it healed almost immediately. Without hesitation, I sprang into action, launching myself at the closest werewolf. My teeth sank into its flesh, causing it to howl in pain. The other two werewolves turned their attention to me, but I was ready. I fought them off with all my strength, my adrenaline pumping as I threw punches and kicks, dodging their attacks with ease. Finally, the last werewolf fell to the ground with a thud, defeated. I turned to Jaxon, who was still lying on the ground, wounded. I rushed over to him, my heart pounding in my chest.
