"I guess I'll settle for the classic spaghetti. Can't go wrong there, right?”
A wave of his hand dismissed my self-deprecation. "Don't even say that, Lucy. You're being too hard on yourself." His words were kind, but they did little to ease the crushing weight of guilt. With a choked sob, I buried my face in my hands, the crisp linen napkin a poor barrier against the storm of emotions threatening to engulf me.
"I feel like I'm a betrayer," I confessed, my voice muffled. "Selfish...like the worst friend anyone could ask for." Shame burned in my throat, a bitter aftertaste of a terrible decision.
