Akata pushed her away. Merindale chuckled. “ Were you afraid because of this? Well, I have a plan. I can ask my father to make you my betrothed. There shouldn't be any problem after that's done. So… are you coming with me or not? ” she asked, extending her hand towards him. “ What's a betrothed? Is it like a medicine that cures illness? ” Merindale broke into laughter. “ You can say that. It's the only medicine for our disease at the moment. ”

Keith was already thinking ahead but it seemed the situation was beyond dangerous. Immediately both their eyes suddenly met and her face beamed with joy "It's you" She said to Keith , getting up on her feet and quickly running towards him. Evelyn replied with a sigh. "What sis, I thought you wouldn't agree, so did you see the groom? Where is your wedding?" Amber asked. “You heard me. We were promised to each other by our families years ago. It was all set, the alliance between our packs. But then you show up, some outsider, and suddenly he’s all about you.” I feel my face heat up. “Jaxon? Is this true? Were you betrothed to her?” He meets my eyes, his expression unchanging, that calm danger lurking beneath like a storm waiting to break. “It was discussed. A long time ago. Before I met you. I can explain.” Discussed? That’s not a denial. My heart pounds harder. “Discussed or agreed to? Because she’s saying betrothed, like it’s a done deal.”

My stomach immediately curled up in knots right on cue because that could only mean one thing. “What is it?” Bells asked once she took in my crestfallen expression. “Dinner with my future in-laws.” I paused. “To most definitely discuss wedding dates.” “Huh.” She leaned back and crossed her arms with a little tilt of her glossy lips. “What I’d give to witness Julian’s reaction during that entire conversation.” Well fuck. I could probably just come up with an excuse and delay the inevitable. Right?

“They’re not here to drag you to hell. They’re here to have dinner, and get to know you a little bit before the wedding ceremony. Besides, I’m sure your father would make sure nothing happens to you.” She glared at me in the mirror. “You don’t understand. What if they’re wife beaters? I heard that the brothers don’t even like themselves? What if they don’t even let me leave the house? What if they…” She broke off with a choked sob. “Why does it have to be me?” “That’s how betrothals work, Caterina. Your father arranged it. You knew this was coming.” She sat up straighter, sniffing. “Then why not you? You’re a Reed too, aren’t you?”

For the first time since we’ve entered this room, his manic seems to clear for just a moment, as his smile fades into something sharper. And I know without a doubt, that the betrothal is real. “Betrothal?” I echo, before I can stop myself. I need to hear it from him, hear him tell me that his words are all pretty but fake.

Just a clean, effortless lie. “Should there be?” he said, trying to sound casual. I shrugged, playing my part. “Pre-wedding jitters, I suppose. With everything going on—work, the wedding—I feel like we haven’t really connected lately. And sometimes I wonder… are there things we should discuss before taking this next step?” He reached across the table to take my hand. “I promise, once we’re married, I’ll give you all of my time.” He stood and moved around the table to embrace me. I let him pull me close while my heart performed a complicated dance between love and betrayal.
