Selene watched, nestled under Leon’s arm, a small, satisfied smile on her lips.
I saw the gleam of white bone. And there, nestled beside the skeleton’s chest cavity, was the heart-stone. It pulsed with a soft, inner light, undimmed by years of earth.
Leon whooped with glee. He snatched it up, feeling its warmth in his palm before stuffing it into his jacket. Then he kicked at the bones, scattering them.
“You will die howling for this!” I screamed, the promise tearing from me.
“My fate is my own,” he said, wiping his hands. “And tonight, I claim it.”
