Not mercury, but a thick, black tar-like substance that smelled of burnt hair and ancient dust.
"The Oubliette," Dante hissed, his obsidian eyes widening. He looked at Ivy, then at Silas, who was backing away into the shadows of the quay. "Silas! Take the note! The note is the map!"
But Silas wasn't looking at the note. He was looking at the clockwork doll, which had begun to move. Its tiny, silver hands were reaching for the scissors in Dante’s pocket.
"The doll isn't a mirror, Dante," Silas whispered, his voice trembling. "It's a bomb."
