I didn’t even realize he’d gotten off me! I quickly turn back toward the vamp I’d been stalking to find him gone, so I rush to Tate and of course… find him there. He grabs Tate’s wrist mid-air and has it halfway to his mouth when Blake, a Shadow vampire appears from practically thin air. He snatches the vamp’s head in his hands and jerks it, ripping it clean off his neck.

I jerk back, my breath catching. That’s when I see him. A man steps out of the darkness, tall and unnervingly still. His eyes gleam unnaturally in the dim torchlight—a shade of crimson that sends a cold shiver down my spine. He’s not human. I recognize what he is before he even speaks. Vampire. “You need to move,” he says, his voice smooth, unhurried, as if he didn’t just kill a man in the span of a heartbeat. “More will come.”

Kneeling before her was a man—or what had once been a man, or had never been that. He wore a dark, tailored coat that looked far too fine for the forest, its edges brushing the dirt. His skin was corpse-pale, stretched too thin over sharp bones, and his hair hung in greasy black strands that swayed as he moved. When he turned slightly, I caught sight of his mouth—blood dripping from his lips, fangs glinting. A vampire. His eyes, when they met mine, were pits of burning red. But he didn't stop feeding. He pressed his mouth back to the woman's neck, drawing out another ragged breath from her before she fell still again.

The first figure materialized out of a swirl of brimstone—tall, pale, and haunting. Aron, the vampire, moved with impossible silence, his eyes latched onto Eve's throat, his lips drawing back to reveal fangs. "You're not from here, pretty pet," he murmured, circling her like a vulture. Alexander, the incubus prince, descended from the sky like a dark feather, his eyes smoldering as he inhaled her scent. "But you will be," he added. Alexander brushed the back of his fingers over the breast of her dress, her nipple hardening as it reacted to his hand.

I noticed how Carolina instantly tensed up. That boy was tall and dressed all in black. I had never seen him before, but the psycho grin on his pale face gave me a bad feeling. "Who are you?" I asked him. He looked at us as if he had been looking for us and found us. But the words that came out of Carolina's mouth completely threw me off: "He's a vampire."

I announce. He responds with a dry chuckle. “Whoever educated you for this little attempted infiltration into our ranks did so quite poorly. No one is born a vampire.” “My mother was Victoria Black.” Becca gasps, but Sebastian is unimpressed. “Am I supposed to know who that is?” he asks piously, which is met with an arm slap from Becca. “Victoria.
