The drive down to the venue took about an hour, and that gave me more than enough time to familiarize myself with the issues that needed sorting out. Soon we arrived at the Blackwood estate. It wasn’t owned by any syndicate. Rather, it belonged to a centuries-old arbitration council trusted by every major crime family. The estate sat on the highest hill overlooking the city, hidden behind wrought-iron gates and centuries-old oak trees. To anyone passing by, it looked like nothing more than an old mansion preserved for the wealthy. But only a few knew it had hosted peace talks, fragile alliances, and declarations of war long before most of the city’s skyscrapers were ever built.

"Just what we need, an audience for this disaster." The main house appeared around the final bend, a sprawling timber and stone structure that dominated the central clearing. Three stories of rustic elegance with wraparound porches and large windows, it had been home to generations of Blackwood Alphas. Standing on the front steps, waiting with the unmistakable authority of his position, was Marcus Blackwood.

Blackwood Manor had never simply been a home. It was part prison. Part sanctuary. Part living thing. And it was exhausted. Alaric remained on one knee, one hand braced against the cracked floorboards while silver light pulsed violently beneath his skin. Each pulse answered the chains buried deep below the mountain.

The drive to the Blackwood estate took twenty minutes, leaving Silver Creek proper and heading into the more exclusive section of pack territory where the wealthiest and most influential families maintained their compounds. The Blackwood estate had been in the family for generations—sprawling grounds, a main house that was practically a mansion, and enough security to rival a small fortress. It had always intimidated me, this physical manifestation of everything the Blackwoods represented. Power, legacy, tradition—all the things I'd supposedly threatened by existing.

Blackwood Towers fulfilled all her hopes, blending with the sky, the landscape and the country around it as it it had stuck down roots and grown from the soil rather than owing its creation to man. Karen fell in love with it immediately, and for ever. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it,’ she breathed, enraptured. ‘It began as a priory in the sixteenth century, then the land was acquired by the Burnet founding-father, through skulduggery, no doubt,’ Tony said as they cruised down the long, gradual slope leading to the front of the house. 'Was he dishonest?’ Karen was intrigued, bewitched, already falling under the manor’s powerful spell.

Not about the hotness or coolness, it had this impulsive impression, insanity and panic mixed. “Help!!” The cries became louder. I motioned towards the sound, my back held down by the numerous textbooks in my bag. The sight of numerous adults tumbling out of their houses in order to get to the house merely two houses away. Between them was Father Timothy with his white staff. He carried it everywhere he went, regardless of the situation. “Get back, everyone. Get back.” Screams began, everyone scrambling like they were being chased by a lunatic. Well, they were being chased, but not by a lunatic, by something more mysterious.

The heavy oak doors to the Grand Council Chamber creaked open. The sound echoed through the high stone room, Christopher walked in. His boots hit the marble floor, loud and alone. The room was freezing. A big stone fireplace was at the far end, but no fire was lit. Behind a long, curved wooden table sat the 5 senior elders of Blackwood Pack. These were not wolves who bowed to young Alphas. They had run this territory long before Christopher was born. They served under his dad and his grandfather.

Kensington noted, a pleased smile on her lips. "Thank you for this opportunity, ma’am," Elena said quickly, nerves making her voice slightly breathless. Mrs. Kensington waved a hand dismissively. "I admire your eagerness. Let’s get straight to business." She gestured for Elena to sit. Elena lowered herself onto the plush seat, her heart hammering in her chest. "Blackwood Enterprises has over fifty properties in and outside the country," Mrs. Kensington began. "This city holds its headquarters, which is why Adrian Blackwood is so well known."
