My eyes scanned the darkness for movement. From hidden vents along the skirting boards, a thick, pearlescent mist began to bleed into the room. It wasn't smoke. It was heavy, clinging to the floor like dry ice. It carried a faint, sickly – sweet chemical smell. Neuro – toxin. Or a weaponised hallucinogen. I registered it instantly.

I leave my room and kiss my grandmother on the cheek goodbye. I take my makeup bag as I leave the house and head next door to Xeno and Dave's house. I want to get Xeno so we could meet up with Natasha at the mall. "Xeno, I'm ready!" I shout from outside her door. Xeno walks out with a big smile on her face and an evil glint in her eyes. "What did you do now Xeno?" I ask, shaking my head.
