My dark thoughts shattered when a familiar voice called out. "Miss!" I turned. Nina hurried across the garden path toward me. As always, she wore a bright smile that somehow survived in this gloomy place. A silver tray rested carefully in her hands. Immediately, dread settled in my stomach. When she reached me, she extended the tray proudly. "I brought something you would love." I forced a polite smile, then I lifted the lid and my smile vanished. Blood. Again. Served neatly inside the same small crystal glass. The dark crimson liquid shimmered beneath the overcast light. My throat instantly felt dry. I licked my lips before speaking.

Nina pov I’m already on the floor with him. I don’t remember getting there—only that my knees are burning against concrete and my hands are slick with blood, and Dante is too still beneath me. The world has narrowed to the rise of his chest. Too shallow. Too uneven. Every breath feels borrowed. “Stay with me,” I say, over and over, the words tearing out of my throat like I can stitch him together if I repeat them enough times. “Dante, look at me. Don’t close your eyes. Please—please don’t—”

Trey wouldn’t even try it out of fear we’d tease him to death. I dropped my hands flat on the table and leaned forward, fully hard and not giving a damn who saw. I was free ballin’ as usual, so I didn’t have anything to hold me in, my cargo pants would show it. I watched this fierce red headed siren’s fingers fly effortlessly, as if she could play it in her sleep. Simone might be a booking agent but she’s younger and doesn’t always know or appreciate damn good music. She looked bored and I couldn’t waste anymore time looking at her.

He still managed to fight back making her laugh. Simone sat on the bed and grabbed the cotton ball from the nightstand. Dipping it in water, she cleaned the blood from the wound keeping her gaze locked with his. She held his one hand over his torso, and smooth as ever, with the other, she touched the wound with the sharp point of the knife.

But for what? I closed my eyes and saw them lying there in their own blood. I forced them open again and saw the dark forest floor littered with leaves and the tip of familiar worn, polished, black boots. “Simone.” He knelt before me, and warm, calloused fingers gently gripped my chin, tilting my head back. His mismatched eyes were filled with a sort of sadness that I hadn’t seen from him before. Maybe he was capable of more emotion than he let on.

Nina stands by the door, eyes wide, plastic cup in hand. My heart swells. She looks almost normal…until I see the blood.

I held my hand out, trying to catch the raindrops on my palm, only to be met with the metallic smell of blood, and crimson staining my hand. My eyes immediately casted upwards to find Nina’s body thrown up onto a pike, but it wasn’t really her body anymore. She was ripped open from centre of her chest to her wrists to allow the blood to pour out, her body draining. I was horrified at the sight of Nina’s naked bloody body. I spun around every way, looking for Charlie but she was no where to be found. My heart was racing out of my chest, and I could smell her sweet scent, so I knew she was still close. Suddenly, inky black tendrils of smoke surrounded the forest, rushing past me as they began

My vision blurred, blood pooling under me. Nina screamed, the sound cutting through the night like a knife. She rushed to me, her hands turning me over gentle. Her face hovered above mine, eyes wide with fear, tears mixing with the soot on her cheeks. She placed her lips on mine, breathing hard into my mouth, her air filling my lungs. “Please don’t die,” she whispered between our lips, her voice breaking. “Please.” Her kiss was desperate, soft and warm, tasting of salt and smoke. My chest tightened, not from pain, but from something deeper.

I said weakly, “please don’t say that.” But she turned away, covering her mouth like she couldn’t stand to look at me. I wanted to scream, to explain, but the words wouldn’t come. All I could see was the car, the flash of movement, Nina’s hand slipping from mine. And then the blood. God, the blood. That smell — metallic, hot, alive — was suddenly everywhere again. My heart raced, and I gagged. I could almost feel it on my skin. I tore at the sheets, trying to wipe it off, but there was nothing there. Just clean white fabric.

Nessa asked with an arched eyebrow and defense stance. "To collect the baby from you." Simone answered with a glare. Back to present: Simone scoffed. "B-But you are about to kill a new born in cold blood. Look, I know you are an heartless assassin but killing a child..." Her voice softened for a moment. "Won't affect me." Nessa completed with an emotionless face. She looked down at the wailing child and glanced at the moon whose light was dim. Simone slowly and carefully muttered a spell and a ball of purple mist suddenly appeared on Simone's stretched hand. Nessa looked up suddenly and saw it coming towards her but it was too late.
