It fell from my face, landing directly on Rye's clawed hand where it gripped my throat.
Rye screamed, jerking away from me like I'd burned him. He stumbled backward, clutching his hand as smoke rose from where my tear had touched his skin.
Air rushed into my lungs. I gasped, choking, my body convulsing as oxygen flooded back. My vision cleared slowly, the black spots receding.
I pushed myself up on trembling arms, still coughing, still struggling to breathe properly. Across from me, Rye stared at his hand in shock and pain. The skin where my tear had landed was blackened, blistered, smoking.
