I looked up, my vision blurring as the Warlord's empty gaze fixed on me. "The two bloodlines," it continued, the echo vibrating in my marrow. "The Sun-fire and the Moon-frost. You are the anchors that keep the Void at bay. To end the balance, we must end the blood. We have come to devour the Lycan Queen and the Black Wolf heir. The Lycan Warlord, shifted into his massive, scarred war-form, hit the front line of the Wardens like a runaway train. He ignored the spears that poked at his thick hide. He swept a massive clawed hand out, shattering three shields and sending the soldiers behind them flying into the air like ragdolls.

Her remaining good hand raked over my arm, nails biting into my skin and creating four long scratches that welled with my blood. “Die, bitch!” I growled out, forming a fist with my hand and preparing to use my magic to kill her. I closed my eyes, knowing I could just as easily reverse cellular repair and shred her heart to pieces. Remy merely let out a cackling laugh of triumph, completely unbothered my her broken wrist, hand twisted at an unnatural angle. “Kill her and you lose your gamma,” came the blonde warlock’s amused voice.

We arrived too late. The border was soaked in blood, pack warriors torn apart. The scent of ash and silver lingered. “Witchfire,” Dax whispered, eyes scanning the trees. The rogues weren’t acting alone anymore. Something darker had joined the war. I stood before the Bloodfang warriors. Their eyes held doubt, and something colder, fear. “I don’t need your crown,” I said, voice steady. “But if you want a future, you’ll follow me now.”

“Anyway, whatever they were doing, hopefully it’s over now, right? He’s dead. And Calder killed his associates when we got out of there. Whatever their plan was, it’s got to be over now.” I hoped. Hawthorne and company might have been pretty fucking far from doing any such thing, but how much damage could a group of warlocks do on a smaller scale, working toward a goal like that? Strike that, I knew exactly how much damage, because I’d been part of the wreckage left behind. And so had Nate, for that matter.
