The air grew heavier with each passing hour, as though the world itself was bracing for something unnatural. Ever since the gods’ messenger appeared, the countdown had begun—seven days until the Day of the Blood Moon. Seven days to prepare. Seven days to survive. Ava sat beneath the twisted elder tree outside the sanctuary, the bark behind her pulsing faintly as if aware of her presence. The wind was sharp, slicing through the night with whispers. Blood from my nose had run past my lips and chin, smearing across my cheeks and ears. The front of my shirt had long since lost its original color. It was soaked through with blood. What had been controlled panic upstairs had become full collapse downstairs. Footsteps everywhere. Doors slamming. Voices overlapping until nothing made sense anymore. Then the smell hit. His Blood was everywhere. We reached the lobby and everything stopped feeling real. Daniel was on the floor. Blood spread beneath him like it had been given permission to take over the room. Allistair tried to shout, but his vocal chords betrayed him. The battlefield erupted around him and screaming voices and pounding wings, and reality itself began to rend. The book thrummed. Not with a vibration of power or a flash of illumination. Just a presence, an absence that filled the space. The man caught in Lucifer’s grip shook as blood dripped from his fingers, seeping into the pages before disappearing as if devoured.

I exhale loudly and make to snap the book shut but the sharp end prick my finger. With a hiss under my breath, I press my finger tightly as tiny drops of blood trickles down. The blood drops on the page and like a mystery, words begin to form, unraveling themselves. I watch with shock, my heart pounding against my ribcage at the swirling letters that aren't there before. As soon as it starts, the strokes end. I glance warily at my finger which has healed instantly and with my pulse spiking, I read the words; ‘Rare is the blood born beneath the crimson gaze of the moon,
