"Please be—" ‎A hand grabbed my hair. ‎ ‎"Got one!" a rough voice shouted. ‎ ‎Pain exploded in my scalp as I was yanked backward. I stumbled, falling hard onto the muddy ground. A Bloodmoon soldier stood over me, his face covered by a black tactical mask. He raised his rifle butt, aiming to knock me out. ‎ ‎I didn't think. I didn't freeze. ‎ ‎I will teach you to bite. ‎ ‎I rolled. ‎ ‎The rifle butt smashed into the mud where my head had been a second ago.

I nod, her words settling into my bones like a vow. As the sun begins to set, painting the crystal wastes in shades of crimson and gold, Thessia calls Kael and me to her tent. I gasped, clawing at the guards’ arms, but they held me steady. Then I felt it, wetness on my arm. I looked down. Blood poured from the injection site, thick and fast, running down my skin in crimson rivers. It spattered on the marble, bright against the black stone. My knees buckled. The guards tightened their grip, but my body sagged, weak and trembling. My vision tunneled. Somewhere far above me, Damien’s voice spoke, steady and merciless. “It is sealed.” The world tilted. But I just could not help it any longer, being face to face with a wolf had everything flooding into my brain, and I wanted to scream my lungs out. Blood. It was blood that I saw. My parents' blood, spilled on the wooden floor around their heads. I saw their lifeless eyes and still bodies, and wounded faces. I saw my eleven year old self crying and screaming for them to wake up and look at me again, to call me their baby again. But that did not happen, it never happened. And I saw the people that had done that to them, their smug faces and crooked smirks, their hands stained with the blood of my parents, and the set of tattoos on one of their forearms.
