I looked once more at my princess lying on the cold bed, I felt every inch of my body shudder with rage and fury. Exit the hospital towards the parking lot. I got into my car and left on a painful and sad path of homesickness. As I drove, I felt my muscles rotting as if a virus had taken over everything. I parked near the shore and started walking. It was already dark and the lights from the buildings adorned the city, like decorations on a Christmas tree. My Christmas miracle. What did my father mean by that?

Sable Christmas Eve settled over the clubhouse louder than any holiday had a right to. Someone had dragged in a cedar that looked like it had been bullied out of the desert and forced into seasonal participation, and now it stood in the corner of the common room sagging beneath mismatched ornaments, colored lights, and enough tinsel to qualify as a fire hazard. Bryce had declared the crooked angel on top “punk rock,” which earned him a threat from Hannah involving a serving spoon and his kneecaps. Charlie laughed so hard she nearly dropped a tray of cookies, and half the men in the room pretended they weren’t enjoying the whole thing as much as they were.

This had happened before. Panic surged through me. I raised my hand and slapped myself, the sharp sting confirming I was awake. “What’s today’s date?” I demanded. Jordan teased, placing the order and pretending not to notice how familiar her choice felt. Once everything was set, he dimmed the lights and turned on Elf. The Christmas feast covered the entire table. Everything from the roast venison to the mulled wine and the gingerbread house was a reminder of the festive occasion, which celebrated the warmth of being with one's family. However, I must admit this one display caught my eye for a very different reason. I take in the white-lighted reindeer dangling from a lighted tree containing what is left of Santa’s sleigh. A trail of red lights falls from the reindeer’s head and pools in freshly fallen snow. I have never seen a Christmas massacre and I doubt I ever will again. It is marvelous. I laugh because I honestly can't help myself. For once, humanity surprised me. I say out loud, “God, I'd love to meet the person behind this.” A lady wearing a dark woolen cloak with flaming red hair asked, “What would you say to the creator?”

I draw a circle on the color palette and turn the lights on. Now, Jamie’s clown face is brightened up by vibrant lights that blinks and change colors rapidly. “Almost forget to turn your light bulbs on.” I said, pointing at the phone screen, “Do you want to add some music?” Jamie gives the blinking fairy lights wrapped around his neck a weird glance, “These light bulbs sing?” “Hell yeah.” I read as I swipe down the list, “There’s Christmas carols on the playlist——Silent Night, We Three Kings, The First Noel…”
