She plucked several, ignoring the sting as the sap touched her skin. Last was moonbloom, a delicate white flower that only opened at night. Its scent was soft, floral, deceptively gentle, but extremely potent when mixed with the others. She gathered three blossoms, careful not to bruise them. The combination would work. It had to. She rubbed the crushed frostleaf along her neck, her wrists, the collar of her shirt. The cold scent burned her nose, but it dulled the warmth of Kaelan’s scent almost instantly. She smeared duskroot along her arms, grimacing at the bitterness. Moonbloom, she tucked into her pocket; she’d need it later for the spray.

“Ms. Jensen, your partner and the kids are amazing. You’re really lucky. “Your arm would have been fine with just some ointment. But they insisted you stay in the hospital and took care of you the whole time.” Moon smiled. Pride shone in her eyes. Julian walked in with the two boys. He handed her the bouquet he was holding, and a warm smile spread across his face. “Your discharge papers are ready. The boys picked these flowers this morning. Congratulations on getting out of the hospital!” Zayden and Yannick leaned in on either side. “Ms. Jensen, look! She made a whole show of leaving, looking wronged. Caleb grabbed her wrist. "Holly, we've known each other for over twenty years. How are we supposed to just cut ties?" She spun back, pointing at me, voice sharp with resentment. "Then what do you want me to do? Your bride treats me like I'm trying to steal her place. If I don't leave, what am I supposed to do?
