Camille's POV "Twenty million dollars." A hush fell over the room the second the auctioneer announced the starting price for Blue Star. Then, almost immediately, someone raised their paddle. Twenty-five million, thirty, forty. It was the centerpiece of the evening, and the crowd was ravenous for it. But by the time the bids blew past seventy million, only three bidders remained. Noticing my paddle was still down, Elise finally leaned in close and couldn't help asking, "Aren't you going to bid?"

A wave of astonished whispers swept through the room. I locked my eyes onto Brian. His expression had not changed an inch; his pristine corporate mask was completely flawless. He looked entirely, terrifyingly calm. “Thirteen million.” Brian didn’t even pause for the auctioneer to call the previous number. The rival bidder’s jaw visibly clenched. “Thirteen point four.” Brian raised his paddle. “Okay. Thirteen point four.” The auctioneer’s voice grew increasingly animated, feeding off the electricity in the room. “Thirteen point six.” The rival bidder stared hard across the room at him, then lifted his paddle.

Serena shook her head slightly. If the entire stone had been the vivid Paraíba hue that peeked out on the surface, it would have been a bargain. But knowing what was inside… the bidders were throwing their money at a dream. The room began to quiet. The auctioneer’s eyes scanned the crowd.

“Starting bid, one hundred thousand.” “Two.” “Three.” “Five.” The room snapped alive. Voices cut through the air, sharp and hungry. Bids rose like bullets, sharp and merciless.
