I froze.

At Covenant, they were ammunition. Emma had mocked them endlessly, calling them “ice chips,” “unnatural,” “attention-seeking.” She’d made me wish they were brown, ordinary, invisible.

“Blue like glass,” someone whispered in awe. “Like the ocean.”
“Pretty,” another added.
