“Back door. Now.” That was all it took for my legs to unlock themselves and I barely nodded in response. I grabbed a few loaves of bread as I walked around the counter and through the beaded curtain into his hallway, then past the storage room till I got to the door which I pushed open and slipped out into the alley. ‘Don’t look back. Just breathe and move.’ I could only chant to myself repeatedly as I wove through narrow back paths I now knew by heart, shortcuts between old houses and herb gardens, paths I walked with Rio, Aria and Elle on slow mornings.

Fewer stores with lights in the windows. This part of the city felt different. Scarier. There was trash on the sidewalk. Broken glass in some places, and the buildings looked old and sad. Jace wanted to turn back but he didn't know which way back was anymore. He was completely lost. He saw what looked like a shortcut between two buildings. An alley. Maybe if he went through there he'd come out on a street he recognized. He turned into the alley. It was dark here. Really dark. Darker than his room at night even with the lights off. The kind of dark that made Jace think about monsters under the bed.

Maybe it was the stormy weather that was messing with Calla’s sense of reasoning. Maybe it was the desperation that had built up so much it overflowed… or maybe she had finally lost it. Because the real Calla would never think of following a total stranger into a dark alley, alone, the old Calla would have smacked the shit out of the present Calla. The alley stretched ahead, narrow and dim, the kind of place that swallowed sound and light whole. The rain had reduced, leaving the ground damp, small puddles catching what little glow came from the street behind her.

I had maybe fifteen minutes before Nala’s spell activated. I could go back and wait. Or I could walk off some of the restless energy that had been crawling under my skin for the past week. I chose to walk. The alleyways on this side of town were narrow and winding. They twisted between buildings that looked like they’d been standing since before I was born and would probably collapse the moment someone sneezed too hard. The crowds thinned out the deeper I went until it was just me and the rats and the occasional beggar who took one look at my face and decided to find somewhere else to be.

This was the old district of New York, with narrow streets, old courtyard houses and alleys on both sides, dim streetlights, and few pedestrians. The business car stopped at the entrance of an inconspicuous alley, which was already cordoned off. Several action team members in black uniforms stood there. When they saw Amelia and the others get out, they immediately greeted her respectfully. "Captain." Amelia nodded lightly, then quickly walked into the alley. The alley was deep, the ground uneven, and the walls on both sides were mottled and peeling, covered with moss. The air was filled with a faint smell of blood, mixed with a chilling coldness that grew stronger the deeper she went.

But desperation had driven her to this point. The alley was narrow and foreboding, hemmed in by towering brick walls that seemed to lean inward, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. Shadows danced ominously in the flickering light of a single, half-burnt-out street lamp. Alessia leaned against the rough brick wall, pulling her coat tighter around her body as if it could shield her from the unseen dangers lurking in the darkness.

[Arella] Two days later, we finally located the only bakery in Backwater Alley. True to the city’s name, the place was utterly demented. The snarls and sneers we received from passersby sent a chill slithering down my spine, despite the heavy security flanking me. It wasn’t just the people that made this place hell—it was everything. The very air felt wrong, thick with the scent of rot and dampness, like misery had been ground into the pavement for generations. The streets reeked of filth and desperation, a choking combination of decay and stale piss, and even with the promise of protection, a thick wave of unease clung to my skin like a second layer.

A narrow alley stretched between two old buildings—dark, easy to miss. “There. Less attention.” Without waiting, I pulled her along. The alley was tight, barely wide enough for the two of us. The walls were damp, stained with cracks and grime. A musty smell hit us the deeper we went, our footsteps echoing faintly. “This place…” Lorian murmured, uneasy. “It doesn’t look promising, Alex. I don’t like it.” “I’m not looking for promising,” I replied coldly. “I’m looking for unnoticed. In case you’ve forgotten, we’re being hunted.”

My magic. Barren streets with only a few tipsy patrons sprawled out like a network of veins, each one leading into the heart of the City of Rebels. Piss, ale, and sex wafted from the many alleyways and darkened alcoves. The moon hung overhead, and I felt it like a second heartbeat in my chest. I closed my eyes and sucked in a deep breath, only to open them when I heard something crack several feet behind me. A sickly sensation crawled up my spine, muffled by the glamor still cloaking my appearance.

[The Vacuum of the Soul] The laboratory on Golden Lane was not a place of chrome and glass, but a subterranean vault of damp stone and heavy oak, hidden beneath the foundations of the Alchemist’s Street. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and the heavy, sweet rot of old paper.
