“Please? Pretty please?” I sighed and finally relented, although my fingers were already black from handling this seemingly ancient book. I flipped to the next page, where the story immediately began. There was no cover page, and no title to be seen anywhere. “Once upon a time,” I read, deciding that it wasn’t worth arguing about and that I could make something up if the story got strange, “there was an old man who lived all by himself.” A strange premise for a kids’ book, I thought to myself, but kept reading.

He ran out of my room, and I stayed there on my bed, waiting for him to come back. After a couple of minutes, he entered my room again with a book in his hands. He went up to my bed again, laying his body beside me as he opened the book to start reading. I notice that the book was for kids, titled "The Prince's First Love.". "Once upon a time, there was a prince named Lucas. Every woman in their palace wanted to be with him. However, the prince was aloof, too scared to even talk with other people. One day, he decided to walk around their garden, but when he was about to sit beside the long tree, he saw a girl smelling the flowers in their garden. And for a moment, instead of feeling scared,

“Come, Brian. Daddy’s reading us a story.” He hesitated only a second before climbing up, squeezing himself beside his sister. Arya looped her little arm around him, and he leaned against me, his head resting on my side. My throat tightened as I adjusted the book so both of them could see. “Ready?” I asked softly. They nodded, their faces expectant, their eyes wide. And so, I began. “Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there lived a princess who was braver than all the knights in the land. She had hair as golden as the sun and eyes that sparkled like the stars. But one day, a fearsome dragon came to her village…”

It felt strange, how something so small could pull at me like that. We kept walking. Somewhere near the corner shelf, I stopped again — a thin book caught my eye. The First Year: A Guide for New Parents. I reached for it, running my thumb along the spine. Pages soft, edges new. I flipped through — pictures of fathers holding babies, smiling mothers, small notes on feeding and sleep routines. For the first time that day, something in my chest loosened. “You know,” the storekeeper said, glancing at the book, “most fathers come back for that one. They say it helps.”

It felt both strange and familiar that I no longer lived here, but I knew this little world belonged to Noah. “Noah, which book do you want to read?” I asked, sitting on the edge of his bed. He hurriedly took a picture book from his nightstand and handed it to me. “This one. About a kind dragon.” I smiled faintly, opened the first page, and began to read. My voice was hesitant at first, but then it flowed more smoothly as Noah’s eyes focused on me, listening to every word. I stared at the colorful cover, which depicted a green dragon with a wide smile. “Wow, this dragon looks so friendly. Are you sure this is a dragon, Noah? Aren’t dragons usually scary?” I asked, pretending to frown.

I was still making breakfast when they ran into the kitchen holding the new book. “Mama, can we read it again?” “Before school?” “Yes.” I looked at the clock. “We have a little time.” They climbed onto the chair beside me while I opened the book. We read the first few pages together while the pancakes cooked. They pointed at the pictures and asked questions about every rocket and planet. When we finished, they hugged the book against their chest.

He gave me a small smile and slight nod of the head. "Here read this." A book was put on my lap that looked fun. A book with a king and queen on the cover. I opened it up and a colorful drawing of a dragon and a beautiful princess was on the first page. No words were on it but it still told so much with just the one picture. The next page was even more detailed. I turned back to the first page and than to the next page again. They went together like a flip book but better. "What are you looking at?" A deep and all to familiar voice had me looking up fast. A happy sob left me when Alexander stood in front of me and helped me stand up.

“He’s trying to figure out why grown adults find shaking toys so fascinating.” Carmen wiggled the rattle again. “Because we’re fascinating.” Jayden let out a small gurgling sound, his arms flailing slightly as he kicked his legs. Evelyn leaned forward instinctively, steadying him. “Easy, little man.” She reached for one of the cloth books lying beside them and opened it, turning the pages slowly so Jayden could see the contrasting colors, animals, shapes and big, exaggerated faces designed to stimulate developing eyes. “Once upon a time,” she read softly, not because Jayden understood the words, but because he recognized her voice. “There was a very brave baby lion…”

I haven’t heard of any of them. How did Justus learn to read? Can everyone in Last Pack? I was always told that they can’t. I flip through the book with the sun on the front. The font is small, and the paragraphs are long. I skim the first page, but none of it sticks. My eyes slide along the words like they’re buttered. I’m about to put it back when someone whistles outside the den. My fingers fumble, and the book falls, wide open and face down.
