Bonus Chapter 23 – Edging on the Couch – Round 2 (Mid-Marriage, Lazy Weekend Night) (Eli POV – 1002 words) The living room sat wrapped in darkness except for the fairy lights we’d strung years ago and never once considered taking down — golden strands draped lazily over the back of the wide sectional couch, twined around the tall bookshelves, and looped in gentle arcs across the ceiling fan blades. They cast a soft, warm halo over everything, turning the ordinary space into our own private golden cocoon, intimate and timeless.

Slowly and carefully, she unwrapped the package containing a thick red chemistry book titled 'Chemistry in Everyday Products. Claire's eyes widened, "How did you get this book?" Alex laughed, "Do you like it?" "Very much," Claire said, flipping through the pages of the book. "I heard this book is very rare." "What about the other gift?" Claire noticed a small jewelry box next to the book and immediately opened it. Inside was a bird-shaped brooch with sparkling gems. Claire looked at the brooch and fell silent for a while. "Don't you like it?"

Sunlight filtered through a thick blue curtain, illuminating a small room located in the attic. Right by the door was a large wooden desk, painted white, and a swivel chair. Under the desk was a trash can filled to the brim with some papers, soda bottles, and salty snack wrappers. On the desk there was a laptop in a silver casing, a pile of notebooks and books, and a tiny lamp. Above the desk there was a large shelf with a lot of books - from textbooks, through readings, to romances. Here and there, there were photos framed in colorful frames and many other ornaments such as jugs, figurines, etc.

Then I exhaled slowly and lifted my arms, returning the embrace with cautious gentleness. “I know you’ve been bored in this room,” Claire said as she pulled back, her eyes warm. She held up a small stack of books. “I brought these for you to read. It’s a romantic book.” She paused, studying my face. “You do know how to read, right?” I nodded quickly. “I know how to read,” I said, my voice quiet but firm. I took the books, my fingers brushing the covers. The illustrated title caught my attention, and a deep blush crept up my cheeks before I could stop it.

Clara sighed and decided that maybe she could fix its bindings before returning them. She picked up the loosened page, and unlike the burnt one which she had read last night, this one did really belong to the book. And there she found an almost faded sketch of a gilded hand with fingers that were slender and nails that looked more like claws. It seemed to be holding a heart, dripping blood collected into a pool beneath it.

My eyes landed on books, portions, maps, carved objects and barrels that contained pepper red substances. “What’s this place?” I curiously asked. “We call it the dark room, it contains everything you need to know about Shadowclaw. The book over there is yours to read. It will give you instructions on how to help him.” He answered. I picked the book which was titled ‘LUNA’ and walked out.

But before I could answer, the clasp on the book shimmered with light—and then unlatched itself. All three of us stared. "Did it just... unlock from your blood?" Andy asked, wide-eyed. "I think so," I breathed. "Creepy," he says. We all stared in silence for a moment, like the book might suddenly start glowing or chanting or floating off into the air. "She’s ready," Zerina whispered. "Now, we find the truth." I opened the book and carried it gently to the couch, holding it like something sacred—probably because it was.

Behind the panel was a small space, just big enough to hide something. Inside was a single book. It didn’t look like any of the other books in the library. Its cover was dark, almost black, and made of old leather that looked like cracked bark from a tree. The corners were worn down, and it had no title. Just a symbol. A silver moon. It shimmered faintly, even though the light in the library was dim.
