~ELENA~ The rulebook is stained with blood and I wonder whose blood it was. The thought makes me panic. My hands start to shake. I can't control it. And then the book falls to the ground with a loud thud. I let out a soft cry in fear as I stare at the big book on the floor like it's going to grow a big and wide mouth and swallow me up. What exactly have I gotten myself into?? I calm myself down, taking deep breaths as I finally pick up the book.

Even so, I still grab that colorful one before reading the title on the cover. “Big Magic. Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert.” I nod my head. “Is this even a good read?” I talked to myself once again and start walking back towards the chair for me to sit on. I skim through the pages and concluded that these are new since it smells like bookstore. A flash of memory then flash inside my mind and concluded right after. “Maybe this is one of the books he bought last Saturday?” That day when we saw each other inside that stall but he automatically look away and ignored my whole existence.

After the ten minutes I closed the book. I put it back on the shelf. I walked out of the bookstore. I walked the seven blocks home. I went into my apartment. I locked the door. I did not check it again. I sat at the kitchen table. I sat there until the November light went out of the window, and then I sat there in the dark, and at some point I noticed I was crying quietly, without any of the dramatics the body sometimes gives a person, just water moving down my face the way water moves down a face when the body has, finally, been given a thing it had been carrying for two months and decided to put down.

“I’ll write back.” I buy a small paperback on the way out because I want to put money into a place that gave me my breath back for an hour. The cashier gives me a free bookmark that says, You are already the story. I want to cry again. I don't. I put it in the book like a secret.
