“Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.” We fell into silence. The only sound was distant thunder rumbling above ground. I wondered how long we’d be down here. Minutes stretched. My mind wandered to how close he was. How alone we were. “Tell me something,” I said finally. “Why’d you become a librarian? You don’t seem like the type who likes being stuck behind a desk all day.” Mr. Kane exhaled softly. “Books don’t talk back. They don’t expect small talk. I like the order. And the stories. What about you? History major with a focus on obscure trade? That’s not common.”

My fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the page. My mother had written a small note in the margin. Someone else is looking. I kept reading. The books that keep disappearing from the shelves are the same ones I have been studying. Ancient burial records. Early magical creature classifications. Northern mountain ruins. My breath slowed. Northern mountains again. That place kept appearing in her notes. Whoever the other researcher is, they are careful. The books are returned quickly. The archive logs show nothing unusual. But the pages themselves tell a different story.

Nadine blushed. * * * Back at Nadine's apartment, she saw the books Madam Yvonne promised to lend her, on her doorstep. There were about five of them. A note which said Take everything you read with a pinch of salt. Fact and fiction are in the mix was behind the cover of the first book. Nadine carefully carried them in because they looked like they were really old. She was so eager that without eating, she began to peruse the books. They were written by various physicians, historians and hunters.

Once again, she thought of destiny. It was as though everything had already been decided. No, it was more than that. If felt as though everything that was happening now had already happened before, as if they were living in a constant loop with history swirling round and round, repeating ad infinitum. The life she was living was just one cycle, one in which the outcome had been predicted before, but was not set in stone. She could change the premonitions and prophecies. Whatever was supposed to happen, she still had control over
