"It's not like anyone sent a lock of hair. Yet." His grin faded, replaced by something more thoughtful, more unsettled. “You don’t even want attention.” He sounded almost impressed. "How do you do that?" “No.” “So why do they care?” She closed the archive folder and aligned it with the others. The edges lined up cleanly. “Because attention moves toward what holds.” She tapped the folder once, as if to prove the point. "People want gravity." Paul stared at her. “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” she said. “You just don’t like it.” A smirk flickered. "I'm not here to be liked."

He immediately returned his gaze back to the front as he listened to the lesson, jotting down the keypoints of the discussion. Anne annoyingly turned her head to the front, grabbing her pen, notebook, and her Math book. It was Math period now, and she gave her full focus on the subject. Her notes were almost filled and noticing this, she hastily turned the other page and began writing, not taking her gaze off the board. She had been seeing her book, her notes and the board nonsimultaneously, not wanting to go astray.

"Not because the data was bad. Because the premise was wrong. I was trying to reduce you to a pattern I could manage. But your patterns aren't manageable. They're yours." She looked at him. "The only way to know them is to be with you long enough to see them," he said. "Which isn't prediction. It's something else." "What is it?" she said. He thought about it. "Attention," he said. "Just attention. Without the agenda of control." She set down her wine. "Julian Vane," she said quietly. "Who built a system to predict everything. Is telling me that the alternative to prediction is just — paying attention."

This is a measure of how seriously he takes the things he takes seriously, which is one of the measures I use most reliably. He thought about this as he wrote it. The measure was accurate. Don's seriousness was not a matter of intensity—he was not more intense about reading than about other things. It was a matter of attention. Don paid attention to what he paid attention to. He did not skim. He did not multitask. He read each book as if it were the only book, and he read each page as if it were the only page, and he read each sentence as if it were the only sentence. The seriousness was the attention. The attention was serious.

The book is called The Brief for the Second Life: How Real Things Move Between People. The title arrived in August, on the morning she realized that the book had been circling its own subject for three years and had finally reached it: not the practice as a methodology but the practice as a way of being, transmitted not through teaching but through the specific quality of attention that passes between people who are paying attention to the same things at the same time.
