Closing the app, I decide I’m driving to Target and pull from the lot, determined. I select a pink gift bag for Kennedy and a blue for Jackson with white tissue paper. Next, I place two pregnancy tests in my cart. I scan the book section while reminding myself I’m not looking for my next romance novel. I quickly spot the What to Expect When You’re Expecting book for Kennedy. Nearby, I see a book perfect for Jackson. I lay the Dude You’re Gonna Be a Dad! Book in my cart and dart to the check stands.

My eyes caught the familiar pair of brown wheels that I had seen the first time that I found this coffee book reading shop. All my life and living with my step dad this has been one of my favorite spot considering the fact that I loved reading whenever I felt bored at home and broken I always come here and what hurts most is the fact that Nicolas was the person who brought me here before I turned 13 because he saw how much I loved reading.

But something had shifted. I passed a bookstore with its lights still on. In the window was a sign: GED Prep Books Clearance Sale. I stared at it for a long time before making up my mind to check it out. The woman behind the counter looked up when I entered. I didn’t speak. Just pointed at the book in the window. “That one’s five,” she said. I pulled out a crumpled five-dollar bill from my pocket and handed it over. Walking home with that book felt like stealing light from the sky.

"Don’t fight me on this. You don’t want the cash, fine. Take this instead. You ever need anything... and I mean anything—you call that number. Someone’ll answer. You say my name. That’s it." Adriano. God. I shot up, heart pounding, limbs shaky. I tore through the living room, flipping couch cushions, pulling open drawers I hadn’t opened in months, digging under stacks of unpaid bills and old textbooks. Then I remembered. My book. She’d called my cell phone a few minutes ago to confirm our lunch date. “I’m breathing just fine,” I said calmly, rearranging the bestsellers again. “There should be more of a blend between the new books and the classics.” Grampa walked by, pushing a cart filled with books to restock. “Great job, Savannah. That looks lovely.” I smiled. “Thanks.” He tilted his head. “Yep, you can stop messing with them and get ready for Chris. He should be here any minute.” I frowned as my shoulders slumped. “Okay, Grampa.”

I pull away. "Not here." I can feel my face cool down. "Then, let's go back to the room." Jack whispers huskily. The offer is tempting, then my stomach growls. I'm hungry for two reasons. One, because my mate is sexy as ever. Two, because I haven't eaten in four hours. "Are you hungry?" Jack plays with my hair. I nod. "KFC?" I smile. After ordering, we eat in the car. We pass cute stores, filled with anything and everything. There is a store called, I'm So Booked! It was a calendar and a book store. I laugh at the clever word play.

There are several cabs waiting, the drivers sipping on coffee before they go out to accept fares. Knocking on the window of one, I ask him if he’s up for a fare and offer a twenty. He takes it and I give him the address to Tony’s bookstore. Opening the door to the bookstore, I inhale deeply. Oh, I’m definitely coming back here. There are new books then a side room of used books. I could get lost in a place like this for hours.

I’m taking all my books in today to store them in my locker - I can be forgetful and was told off more than once last year for forgetting my class books. A car beeps from outside; I look out of my window to see Hannah waiting for me in her old, slightly beat-up, black pick up. I smile down at her and mouth that I will be right down. “Good morning angel face!” I say to her with a smile as I open the car door and climb in. “Good morning to you too, someone’s chipper today,” she smiles back. “Yeah, well, seize the day and all that,” I quip, and she laughs.
