It recoiled, arching it back and hissed at Suzanne before sprinting away. Suzanne stood back up, looking at her palm. It’s an ominous sign, she thought just as the phone in her back pocket began to ring. The ringtone was a BTS ‘Not Today’ ringtone. It was old man Hendricks. Suzanne blinked, wonder of wonders, Hendricks never called. She pressed the answer button and stepped into her grandmother’s unit. Grandmother was sitting on her bed sipping a can of beer. How grandmother had managed to smuggle in such rarity was beyond Suzanne’s understanding.

I, on the other hand, was coming up here to pass time. Today was the day that Sarah and I were going shopping. I was looking forward to spending time with her and seeing what kind of person she was. I actually felt bad that it took a year for us to do something like this. Sarah told me that she was going to pick me up from school at 3:30. I had an hour to spare, so I decided to go up to the library to wait. I walk over to the reading books section and took up a book to read. The book that I chose was Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. This was one of my favourite books, so I know it will help me pass the time. I took a seat at a table by myself and began to read.

I took a sip from the first drink and then the second drink. Hmmn. Tasty. I opened the book and flipped the pages… I’m at page 89 automatically now. I’m gonna read past him. I reached page 89 and weirdly there was a note there in a small red card. I looked around and took the card, I opened it and it says… “Need a ride? Hurry.” I gasped. Daaash! I took my back pack and the two cans of drinks and the book. I kept the book back on the shelve and dashed outside.

Susy asked, suddenly animated, jumping up from the couch before taking the booklet from Jenny. “I came across it today at the antiquarian bookstore near the shop,” Jenny said enthusiastically. “Will you lend it to me once you’ve read it?” Susy asked. “You can take it today,” Jenny smiled. “I’m reading something else right now, so go ahead and take it. Just return it when you’re done.” “Thank you so much!” Susy said excitedly, and the girls hugged. Susy sat back down on the couch, Jenny grabbed a few crackers, and then she looked at the guys.

Ivana said loudly behind my back and off she went to pick more things and I chuckled, she was fired on her own and it was better to avoid it sometimes. “How about this?” Ivana ran back to me holding some organic carrots and I paused as I looked at her face, she was grinning as she had just won a lottery. “Put it back, that is a no,” I told her and she ignored me, placing it into the cart so I picked them up and returned it to their place but the time I got back to where I left Ivana and the cart, it was not there and Ivana too was not there. I looked around and couldn’t see her. 'Where did she go?’ I walked around the grocery shop. “Fuck, Ivana!” I didn’t say it out loud in order not to draw

Spotting a pretzel kiosk near the entrance, I joined the short line. “One salted pretzel, please,” I ordered when it was my turn. As the vendor prepared my order, my gaze drifted to a nearby stand displaying an assortment of books and trinkets. Without much thought, I picked up a book with a colorful cover and added it to my purchase, just to make my little shopping trip more believable. I didn’t look at the title, and barely even glanced at the cover. I didn’t read much these days, anyway. “Have a great day,” the vendor said, handing me the pretzel and my bag.

“All you gotta do is pick up a book from the return cart by the chapel door. It’s a donation. Look for “The Fault in Our Stars.” He blinked. “The one with the crying teenagers?” “Yeah, that one.” He eyed me. “There better not be a weapon inside it.” I grinned. “Of course not. Just feelings and sodium.” ***** An hour later: Quincy returns to the cell holding the book like it’s been dipped in acid. He drops it on my bed. “There. You and your teen angst.” “Much appreciated,” I say sweetly, peeling back the cover and revealing my treasures tucked into a carved-out hole in the pages.

He was a very smart fellow, you know. Anyway I continued, “I want you to pick up some books for me at the store. I ordered them last week so they will definitely be available by now.” “But they can be delivered…” George pointed out. “I want you to pick them up personally. Your job is to assist me. How come you only look for convenience?” I asked harshly. George stood up immediately. “I will pick up the books,” he accepted. “Shall I bring them here or leave them at the office?”

My breath hitched in anticipation. This wasn’t just a book; it was a treasure. Limited edition picture book. Never seen before illustration. Bonus scenes. A gorgeous full cover character spread. it was practically a BL bible, and I NEEDED IT. Hoodie pulled on, Purse clutched tightly, I rushed out the door. The cool night air offered a brief moment of clarit. Dedication required its price. The thought echoed in my mind as I hurried down the street. The store had opened half an hour ago. Every precious minute felt like a missed opportunity. The image of other fans already clutching their copies fueled a frantic energy.

The stores pass by in a blur and the silence in the car is comfortable. My legs are bouncing up and down at different speeds and I’m buzzing with excitement. I’m humming to myself and feel like I’ve slammed eight shots of espresso. The only thoughts on my mind are the stacks of books in the back seat. They call to me. I can almost hear them whispering to me, begging me to read them. One of them particularly calls to me. It’s called The Alpha’s Good Girl and do I need to say anymore about it? The title speaks for itself, but the blurb reached into my soul and I need the pain and pleasure I know it will deliver. The sun is setting and I don’t even question it as I reach down and pinch myself.
