The book sells in the way that true things sell — slowly at first, then steadily, then to people who press it into other people's hands with the specific urgency of someone who has found something that says a thing they couldn't say themselves. It is not a famous book. It is not reviewed in the places that make books famous. It is reviewed in three journals — one legal, one policy, one literary — with the specific appreciation of readers who recognize something real.

The preparation for the third book was inward: the reading of the journals, both of them, across sixteen years. He had asked Ernest in November: I want to read both journals. Not the private entries — the entries that are about the argument. The entries that are the argument's evidence. I froze and then kept it aside, I couldn't read his journal or anyone's, that was a private. I wouldn't want someone to read mine if I ever wrote anything.

It felt like she was still here with me, in this room, and for a moment, I forgot about everything else. I heaved a heavy sigh and turned around, but something caught my attention on her bookshelf. There, nestled between the works of Jane Austen, was a small leather-bound journal that I had never seen before. I picked it up, feeling its soft cover under my fingertips and carefully flipping through the pages. As I read her delicate handwriting, my heart ached with both joy and sadness. This journal was a window into her thoughts, her feelings, her dreams. It was like a piece of her that I had never known before.

I set them aside for later. Then I reached deeper into the bag and pulled out the books I hadn’t recognized. Several of them were small, leather-bound volumes. Journals. I flipped open the first one and saw pages filled with my mother’s neat handwriting. My breath caught. I closed it gently and placed the journals beside my bed. I would read them later. When my head wasn’t spinning quite so much. There were two larger books left. The first one was heavy. Very heavy. The moment I lifted it, something strange happened.
