He does not have any previous experience in forests, much less in one such as this one. Hiking is another activity he abhors. Extreme sports were his thing, but not this particular one. I brought the book out of my bag, it seems old, well it's a historical book. After reading the book for some minutes, I decided to close my eyes a little to take a nap, but I heard a snap of twigs. Being alert, I looked around but didn't see anyone. Ignoring it, I closed my eyes and listened to the voices of the singing birds and insects in the forest but something was strange, I could hear heavy breathing and then a growl. I opened my eyes, startled and what I saw made me shiver in fear. It was a wolf, a big white wolf, and when I say big I mean it was towering over me.

The wilderness had no mercy, no preference for the strong or the weak, it was a crucible where only the vigilant endured. The following days were a blend of discipline, exploration, and adaptation. I mapped the terrain in my mind, noting the safest paths, the potential ambush points, and the sources of water and prey. I tracked deer, small predators, and even larger, more cunning wolves, testing my instincts against theirs. Every encounter was a lesson: patience, timing, awareness, and restraint. The valley had taught me endurance; the forest demanded precision.

As I took small bites of my meal, my mind wandered back to the book's descriptions. When breakfast was finally over, I excused myself politely and headed back to the garden. I retrieved the book from its hiding place and found a secluded spot where I could read in peace. The more I read, the more I realized how much had been lost to history. The white wolves were not the monsters they had been made out to be. They were beings of incredible power and kindness, who had only sought to live in harmony with others.

But my father had been. He used to say that books were like gardens of the mind — places you could walk into when the real world had nothing left to offer. And maybe that’s what she needed right now. A new place to hide, one untouched by Lucien’s cruelty. I found the one I had been thinking of — The Legend of Winterlight — tucked in the back of a high shelf. Its spine was worn, the pages yellowed, but the story inside was timeless. A tale about a cursed forest, a silver stag, and a girl who saved herself by believing in something no one else could see.

This wasn’t a chase. This was a hunt. The shift hit me like a wildfire, fast and all-consuming. It started deep—bone-deep—like something unraveling inside me, something primal and ancient clawing its way to the surface. My skin burned, stretched, reshaped. Muscles tore and reformed in an instant, snapping into place with a vicious kind of precision. My spine cracked, lengthened, shifting until I was on four legs instead of two. My hands curled, fingers retracting, claws extending in their place. The pain was brief, a flicker of white-hot agony before it settled, replaced by the rush of raw, untamed power.

She asks she with crossed arms I guess she's right. "My name is Hanna" I decide to tell her as I give in "Hanna Wilder" she says my name which causes my body to feel tingly all over Whoa. What was that? I stand up straighter to try and hide this feeling. My ex-boyfriend never made me feel like that. "Pretty name" she says as she tucks a strand of her black hair behind her ear Her eyes never stray away from mine as she does so.

“I don’t know. Daddy says they protect the city, but I don’t see how. They never do anything.” My finger stopped on a worn out book. The faded writing on the spine said Beasts Of The Wild. I pulled it out and flipped it open in the middle. There was a drawing of a yeti-looking creature called a yowg. The description gave details of height, size and hair colour. Dietary information and habitats were also included. I flicked through more pages and found more creatures, some of which I was familiar with. The names, at least. Unfortunately, the book wasn’t organised into alphabetical order, so I had to search a number of pages before I found what I was looking for: Mouse King.
