Chapter 1 Into the Wild The crunch of gravel under my tires faded as I pulled into the remote trailhead parking lot, the last vestige of civilization disappearing behind me. At twenty-six, I, Riley Bennett, had finally hit my limit. No more endless marketing meetings, no more crafting slogans for products I didn’t believe in, and definitely no more nights spent crying over my ex who had called me “too much” before walking out six weeks ago. As a burned out marketing executive, I’d traded my sleek laptop and high rise apartment for a beat up backpack, sturdy hiking boots, and a desperate need to remember what it felt like to breathe without deadlines crushing my chest.

Amid the crisp sound of glasses colliding, I took a sip of the cold beer. The chill slid down my throat, but somehow, it warmed my heart. The road ahead was long, yet there was no reason to look back. Somewhere out there, beyond the horizon, an open wilderness was still waiting for me.

The vivid green grasses were scattered on the ground, and this place has the freshest air ever. I breathe heavily, letting the oxygen pump inside my lungs. The ground was clean and I sat near the river, leaning my back on the bark of the tree. My back tends to ache when I don’t have something to lean on. That’s why in my life, I tend to lean on my brothers. I pulled the book from my tote bag. Before I open it from where the bookmark was placed, I gulped water to refresh myself. then he reached for the book without any difficulty. “Thanks!” Izzy whispered as soon as she got the book in her hand and signaled for Owen to follow her. “We’re done here.” Owen walked behind Izzy and stood nearby when he saw the girl asking the librarian to have her take the book with her for a few days. Then they walk out of the library together. “I will have a week of dreading review and exams in a few days. Let’s have a weekend getaway,” Izzy clung an arm on Owen’s arm as they walked to the parking lot.

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

With careful, agonizing patience, he pushed deeper until he was fully seated. A fresh fire bloomed inside me, raw and wild. It was a sensation of total displacement, of being completely filled. Intrigued, i decided to take the book back to the cabin to show Nikau. When i arrived back at the cabin, i excitedly showed Nikau the book, telling him all about the strange symbols and images that i had seen. Nikau was equally intrigued by the book, but nikau said that he would be leaving to check out on the pack for a few days. He asked me not to join him as he would be travelling in his wolf form. After he left, I settled into my cozy spot by the fireplace in the cabin, I opened the old book I had checked out from the library. The title, "The Lost Village of Ravenswood", immediately caught my attention and I was eager to learn more about this mysterious place.

I observed the scribblings on top of the book. 'The call of the wild... by... Jack London' My heart jumped in ecstasy. I read that book when I was in eighth grade. It used to be my favorite back then. I could read this book over and over again without getting bored. Oh and would you look at that? This was the original copy. Searching the room, I found a sill by a small window, and made myself comfortable in the spot. I turned the cover and lost myself in the magical world called books.
